ASSIGNMENT: give five instances where the liturgy changes the context of the Biblical text and five instances where the liturgy modifies the text.

INSTANCES WHERE THE LITURGY CHANGES THE CONTEXT OF THE BIBLICAL TEXT

1.      FEAST OF ST MARK, EVANGELIST: entrance antiphon
Mark 16:15
Go into all the world, and proclaim the gospel to every creature, alleluia.

Liturgical context
This is used to emphasize the evangelization mission of St Mark.

ORIGINAL BIBLE TEXT
He said to them, “Go throughout the whole world and preach the gospel to the whole human race”.

Biblical context
It is used to emphasize the mission Jesus gave his apostles after his resurrection.

2.      THE COMMEMORATION OF ALL THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED: entrance antiphon
I Thessalonians 4:14
Just as Jesus died and has risen again, so through Jesus God will bring with him Those who have fallen asleep; and as in Adam all die’ so also in Christ will all be brought to life.

Liturgical context
This is used to emphasize the hope for eternal life for the dead.

ORIGINAL BIBLE TEXT
We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will take back With Jesus those who have died believing in him.

Biblical context
This is used to emphasize the merits of Jesus’ triumph over death and his resurrection, what he gained for the Christian dead.

3.      ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY: entrance antiphon
Revelation 12:1
A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon beneath her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.

Liturgical context
This is used to emphasize the honour of assuming the Blessed Virgin Mary to heaven body and soul.

ORIGINAL BIBLE TEXT
Then a great and mysterious sight appeared in the sky. There was a woman, whose dress was the sun and who had the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.

Biblical context
This is used to emphasize the glorification given to Mary by the Holy Trinity for being the mother of God.

4.      CONVERSION OF ST PAUL: entrance antiphon
2 Tim 1:12; 4:8
I know the one in whom I have believed and I am sure that he, the just judge, the mighty, Will keep safe what is my due until that day.

Liturgical context
This is used to emphasize the quality of the faith of St Paul, after his conversion.

ORIGINAL BIBLE TEXT
And it is for the reason that I suffer these things. But  I am still full of confidence, because I know whom I have trusted, and I am sure that he is able to keep safe until that they what he has entrusted to me.

Biblical context
This is used to emphasize the motivation and advices given to timothy by Paul, as his spiritual son.

5.      THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD: entrance antiphon
Psalm 48:10-11
Your merciful love, o God we ponder in the midst of your temple. Your praise, o God, like your name, reaches the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with saving justice.

Liturgical context
This is used to emphasize the merciful love and saving justice of the Lord towards humanity by sending his only begotten son to come and save us.

ORIGINAL BIBLE TEXT
You are praised by people everywhere, and your fame extends over all the earth. You rule with justice; let the people of justice be glad! You give right judgments; let there be joy in the cities of Judah.

Biblical context
This is used to show the acknowledgment of the people of Israel to God as the merciful and just judge and ruler.

1.      PROPER OF SAINTS: entrance antiphon
Psalm 48:10-11
Your merciful love, o God, we ponder in the midst of your temple your praise, o God like your name; reaches the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with saying justice

ORIGINAL BIBLE TEXT
You are praised by people everywhere, and your fame extends over all the earth. You rule with justice; let the people of Zion be glad! you give right judgments; let there be joy in the cities of Judah!

    2.     25TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: communion antiphon
Psalm119: 4-5
You have laid up your precepts to be carefully kept; may my ways be firm in keeping your statutes.

ORIGINAL BIBLE TEXT
Lord you have given us your laws and told us to obey them faithfully. How I hope I will be faith full in keeping your instructions.

  3.      PROPER OF SAINTS: communion antiphon
Luke1:78
Through the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will visit us

ORIGINAL BIBLE TEXT
Our God is merciful and tender, He will cause the bright light of salvation to rise on us.

  4.       COMMON OF HOLY MEN AND WOMEN: communion antiphon
Psalm68:4
The just shall rejoice at the presence of God, they shall exult with glad rejoicing

ORIGINAL BIBLE TEXT
Sing to God; sing praises to his name; prepare a way for him, who rides on the clouds, his name is the lord-be glad in his presence

 5.        FEAST OF ST. FRANCIS  XAVIER, PRIEST: entrance antiphon
Psalm18: 50; 22:23
I will praise you, Lord, among the nations; i will tell of your name to my kin

ORIGINAL BIBLE TEXT
God gives great victories to his king; he shows constant love to the one he has chosen, to David and his descendants forever. Praise him, you servants of the Lord honour him, you descendants of Jacob! Worship him you people of Israel.
