MY FATHER LAND

This fray of my mind is killing me;
It burns my numb heart.
My conscience doesn’t allow me to smile anymore.
When I reflect on you,
I feel weak inside.

Every day I wake up and think about you;
O great, O noble, O famous, O giant, O you Nigeria.
Once apart, later a whole
Why do you now forsake efforts?
Efforts of your heroes past.

Struggling to stand,
You slip and slip and slip.
You burn of your past aberrations;
Your good deeds never justified the terrible ones.
Can good fate ever locate you again?

If this is a colonial spell
Let it be broken;
Let it weaken as minutes pass by.
I dare everything, except my hope that you will be better someday.
Arise o compatriots; let powers that are, bring enlightenment
